Earlier this week we had the first report that the iPhone was spying on us,
Then the next report was that your Android phone was spying on you.
Since then, there have been multiple reports all over the web.
Why are people in this country always promoting fear? It is something that has me baffled. We thrive on things like this, in this country. Some people will stop and nothing to make people mad, paranoid, and just plain scared. Why do we do it? Just for a story?
The first report of this came by O’Reilly researchers Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden, since then there has been nothing but an uproar concerning this matter. Now it’s on the web everyday. There is a file that’s named “consolidated.db”, an unencrypted SQLite that can be found in all “i” devices’ file systems and in the iOS backup files created and updated by iTunes every time an “i” device syncs. The worst part of it, the file isn’t immediately accessible on the device it’s self. It can only be accessed on a jailbroken “i” device, which makes me wonder if Apple is behind this, or those who create pirated software.
The file contains data in the file that is related to so-called geo-fencing. Geo-fencing allows a business or organization to create a virtual “fence” around a location that can provide information on mobile devices. We also know that it isn’t doing it (tracking you) on a consistent basis. The next question is, Why is it tracking at all to begin with? It doesn’t have actual GPS data, it only has location data. Data forensic specialist have known about this for sometime now. It seems that earlier iOS’ contained a similar file, that was however more difficult to extract the data from.
Now we have Congress asking Apple why? I would think though the engineer’s at Apple clearly have better things to do than to track our whereabouts. Reports have it that Apple is collecting the data for WiFi locations for their databases. Yes the Android smartphones do the same thing. For some reason though people want other’s to be feared. I don’t think that it’s a cause for any alarm though. Do Garmin’s and other’s who make GPS devices do the same. These guy’s surely caused an un needed uproar. For those of you who are paranoid though, just simply turn your location data services off. I would love to hear your thoughts. Get out there and enjoy your day.
